The Robotics in Architecture track examines architecture as an intelligent, interactive, and cyber-physical system, rather than as a recipient of robots used for construction, fabrication, or automation. The focus is on designing architectural elements, spaces, and environments that sense, interpret, and respond to human presence, behavior, and emotion, as well as to environmental conditions. Architecture is approached as a living spatial system—capable of perception, feedback, and adaptation—through the integration of non-humanoid social robotics, human–space interaction, and scalable embodied intelligence. Robotics is treated not as an external tool, but as an embedded design logic that enables spaces to behave, communicate, and evolve as active participants in human experience

Students in the Robotics in Architecture Track will:

  • Investigate how robotics transforms architecture into interactive, adaptive, and intelligent spatial systems, rather than focusing on robots as tools for construction or fabrication.
    • Develop design-driven competencies in conceiving responsive architectural elements, spaces, and environments that sense, interpret, and react to human presence and environmental conditions.
    • Apply principles of non-humanoid social robotics, cyber-physical systems, and human–space interaction to architectural design challenges across multiple scales.
    • Engage with topics such as interactive and kinetic architecture, cybernetic design logic, embodied intelligence, human-centered spatial interaction, and scalable robotic architectural systems, positioning robotics as an embedded design medium within architecture itself.

Track Course Requirements (12 CRHs)

In addition to completing the core course ARC 342 – Computational Architecture, students should complete the following three technical elective courses:
