ME 238: Solid Mechanics for Engineers

The course is designed to equip students with the fundamental skills required to perform the proper design and analysis of simple components. Emphasis is placed on the equilibrium of particles and rigid bodies, where the relationship between external loads and support reactions is studied, along with the resulting internal forces and deformations. Structural elements and components such as trusses, beams, bars, columns, and cables are introduced. Stress analysis of these components under axial loads, torsion, and bending moments is covered. Deflection and stability of structural members are also studied.
