GER 101: German I

Introduces the fundamentals of the German language within relevant cultural contexts. The course develops basic proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing while introducing essential grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary. Emphasis is placed on developing effective communication skills for everyday situations and an appreciation of German-speaking cultures.

GER 103: German I for Medical Students

Introduces the fundamentals of the German language with particular emphasis on healthcare and medical contexts. The course develops basic proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing while introducing essential grammar, pronunciation, and general and medical vocabulary. Students develop basic communication skills relevant to interactions with patients and healthcare professionals and to everyday situations in German-speaking clinical environments

GER 112: German II

Builds on the language skills developed in GER 101, further strengthening students’ proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The course expands grammatical knowledge and vocabulary and develops greater accuracy and confidence in oral and written communication. Students engage with a broader range of everyday situations and cultural contexts while deepening their understanding of German-speaking cultures.

GER 113: German II for Medical Students

Builds on the language and communication skills developed in GER 103, with continued emphasis on healthcare and medical contexts. The course expands students’ general and medical vocabulary, grammatical competence, and proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students develop greater confidence in communicating with patients and healthcare professionals and in handling common interactions encountered in German-speaking clinical and hospital environments.

GER 213: Medical German III

The course seeks to build medical student’s German language communication skills with patients and hospital / clinical staff. Furthermore, the course mediates strategies to cope with advanced medical terminology and hospital paperwork to motivate students to carry on their German language studies in the medical field. Additionally, the course takes the standardized examinations for non-native medical practitioners carried out by the German medical state boards into consideration. Accordingly, the course will prepare students to accomplish tasks re-quired in the three-part language examination: doctor-patient consultation, 2) document findings in the patient records and 3) justifying findings to other medical staff and colleagues.
